Audi presented the first information about the A5 Facelift and S5 Facelift. The models are expected to debut in autumn at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
2012 Audi A5 Facelift & 2012 Audi S5 Facelift
Audi A5 is refreshed at its mid life cycle. Audi A5 receives small aesthetic changes, new engines and changes to the chassis. All these operations are designed to make the A5 more attractive, more economical and dynamic. With Audi A5 Facelift, all engines offered will have direct injection and turbo charging, start-stop system and a kinetic energy recovery system as standard. For some Audi A5 models, CO2 emissions were reduced by 22%, while fuel consumption has decreased on average by 11 percent.
New engines, optimized chassis
The entry-level engine on Audi A5 Facelift is an 1.8 TFSI unit, completely redesigned, which develops 170 hp and 320 Nm. CO2 emissions of the engine mounted on A5 Coupe are 134 grams per kilometer, while the combined consumption is 5.7 liters per cent. Meanwhile, the 2.0 TFSI unit also develops 211 hp. The Audi A5 engine range has received a new gasoline engine: 3.0 TFSI V6 developing 272 hp.
The smallest diesel engine on Audi A5 Facelift is a 2.0 TDI of 177 hp, which has a combined consumption of 4.7 liters per cent in the company of a manual transmission. CO2 emissions are 122 grams per kilometer. The diesel entry-level engine on Audi A5, a 2.0 TDI unit, has the lowest consumption and lower CO2 emissions in its segment. Diesel engine range available for the 2012 Audi A5 is complemented by a 3.0 TDI V6 with 204 hp, which has a mixed consume of 4.9 liters per cent in the version equipped with Multitronic transmission and emits 129 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Audi claims that this is the most efficient 3.0-liter diesel engine in the segment. The top version provides 245 hp, also from a V6 TDI unit. Audi A5 Coupe will become the world’s first model equipped with the new Euro 6 diesel engine that will be introduced within range.
While front-wheel drive versions get either a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable Multitronic unit, the quattro versions of the new Audi A5 Facelift receive either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed twin clutch S-Tronic unit. In the case of quattro A5 models, customers can order the sports differential that distributes engine torque actively between the rear wheels as needed. At the level of chassis, all Audi A5 Facelift models received revised rear axle bearings and optimized dampers for “precise handling and comfort.” In standard, customers receive 17-inch alloy wheels, but Audi offers the possibility to mount even 20-inch wheels. The electromechanical power steering system was revised for all engine versions.
Aesthetic updates
Aesthetic modifications made to the Audi A5 range covers a significant change in the headlights, which have received new LED strip placed also on the A1, A6 and A8 models. The front received a new bumper with larger openings for ventilation and a revised grille. At the rear, all versions have received a new bumper and revised headlamps, with optional LEDs. There are few changes to the interior, including the new steering wheel, a new gear selector for automatic transmissions, a new dressing for the instrument panel and the center console. Also, MMI infotainment system was revised and the range of upholstery and color was also changed. Optionally, A5 Sportback comes with five seats. Customers can pre-order from September and the first deliveries will take place in December.
Audi S5 Coupe receives the 3.0 TFSI engine with 333 hp
Audi S5 Facelift receives the TFSI 3.0-liter engines and 333 hp. Compared with the 4.2 liter V8 engine that its being replaced, the supercharged V6 unit is more economical by 20%, having an average consumption of 8.1 liters per cent. Audi S5 Coupe needs 4.9 seconds to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) and has a maximum speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Aesthetic modifications made to the A5 are also visible on the S5. The quattro system on Audi S5 Facelift received the crown-gear center differential and electromechanical power steering. In standard Audi S5 comes with 18-inch wheels and it’s equipped with special sport suspensions.
