Nico Rosberg says he is happy with the progress Mercedes is making after qualifying sixth for the German Grand Prix.

Rosberg was within 0.3s of Ferrari's Felipe Massa at the Nurburgring, although 1.2s slower than Mark Webber's pole time. Having qualified ninth last time out at Silverstone, 1.8s off Webber, Rosberg saw the performance in Germany as progress and said he hoped it was a sign of Mercedes starting to move its way towards the top three teams of Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren.

"I think it's OK," Rosberg told the BBC. "In general it shows that we're starting to work much better and things are hopefully starting to come good a little bit. I think here for sure we've done a step - everybody else has done a step too - but I think that we've managed to keep the gap the same, maybe even close it down a little bit. So we're going in the right direction and sixth is a good place to start for tomorrow, definitely.

"Whether the conditions are wet or dry, I think we can have a good race from there. I'm happy with the set-up work that we have achieved this weekend and that the new parts are working which is really satisfying. We can see that we are going in the right direction. It should be an exciting race tomorrow and hopefully I can make up a couple of positions in front of all the German supporters."
