Ferrari Challenge Europe in action at the legendary Spa circuit

Spa-Francorchamps, 5 August – The fifth round of the European series of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli got underway today and over the weekend, competitors in the famous one-make series will tackle the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in two races at what is one of the most interesting race weekends on this year’s calendar. There is a packed field, with 24 458 Challenge cars and 10 F430s on the grid, which shows how popular is this track, regarded as one of the oldest and most famous in the world, hosting not only the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix, but also long running endurance races such as the Spa 24 Hours and the 1000 Km of Spa.

Talent has always made the difference here, especially given how quickly the weather can change and even today it proved to be very variable, as sun and rain were both in evidence. In the hour of free practice, the best time was set by reigning champion Philipp Baron (Baron Service) who lapped in 2.28.809, followed by Marco Seefried (Scuderia GT) and the current leader of the championship Max Blancardi (Motor/Malucelli.) Among the Coppa Shell runners, the fastest time was set by Philippe Prette in 2.31.558 in his Motor/Malucelli car, while of those driving the F430, Holger Harmsen of the Lueg Sportivo team was fastest in 2.38.781.

There are two qualifying sessions tomorrow at 09.00 and 12.05, followed by Race 1 at 16.25, while one has to wait until Sunday for the final race, which takes place at 10.20.

The two Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli races will be shown live and replayed by 13 European broadcasters in over 60 countries, while in Italy the event is covered by Sky Italia with replays of the two races over the course of the week.
