Frankfurt 2011 Live: TOP 10 Spectacular Concepts
The Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung 2011 (IAA, English: International Automobile Exhibition), also known as the Frankfurt Motor Show at its 64th edition, has ended. Here are the TOP 10 Spectacular Concepts presented in Germany.
Audi A2
Audi brought in Frankfurt the concept with a familiar name. For many of us, the Audi A2 Concept is a model with strange shapes, avant-garde for its time, but rare enough nowadays. Audi wants to revive the small-class model. The series model will be more attractive than the old A2. Audi A2 Concept has a length of 3.8 meters (149.7 inches), 1.69 meters (66.5 inches) wide and a height of 1.49 meters (58.7 inches). Under the hood there will be a full electric motor, about which for the time being Audi refused to present technical data. Audi A2 Concept will present a series of technological solutions. Audi introduced a glass ceiling that changes the opacity at the touch of a button, and taillights will flash in different intensities depending on weather conditions. The headlights will use cutting-edge LED technology called Matrix Beam. The interior itself has also some interesting solutions. The center console will no longer be placed on the floor, but is now attached to the driver’s seat. Inside of the wheel has touch-type set of commands by which the driver has at his disposal the majority of car’s functions. Most likely Audi A2 Concept announces a future electric model that will be inserted in range between A1 and A3 models as a small MPV class.
BMW i3 and BMW i8
The i range from BMW represents the future for the Bavarian brand. These are electrically or hybrid powered cars, the first in a full range of models from this type which will be produced by BMW. Both BMW i3 and BMW i8 were developed after extensive tests with electric models, especially the MINI E program. These models will enter mass production, but at Frankfurt Motor Show will be presented in the concept stage. BMW i3 will be the first model with an electric propulsion proposed for production by BMW. It will be equipped with an electric motor of 170 hp and 250 Nm. BMW i3 will have rear-wheel drive and a top speed electronically limited to 150 km/h (93 mph). Autonomy will be about 160 km (100 miles), depending by the driving mode. BMW i3 has four seats and the interior will be coated with natural fibers. The concept’s doors are opening on reverse but remains to be seen whether they will remain the same in the series version. BMW i8 is now the Admiral Ship of i range. It’s kind of a hybrid M3, a performance car of the future. BMW i8 will have a 220 hp gasoline engine plus an electric engine of 170 hp. It will need only five seconds to reach 100 km/h (60 mph) and fuel consumption will reach around 2.7 l/100 km, according to BMW. Batteries can be recharged at a normal outlet, the electric autonomy is 35 km. The interior is geared around the driver. Both models bring a new concept regarding bodywork. It is called LifeDrive and has a carbon fiber structure that will protect occupants in case of impact, being at the same time very light.
Ford Evos
Ford Evos is one of the most spectacular concepts that were presented at IAA 2011. It prefigures brand new design language for Ford: this is the new Kinetic style, a style which will be found on other models of the mark. Many have said that Ford Evos Concept prefigures a future sports model inspired by the legendary Capri. Ford has not yet confirmed this. Ford Evos has the length of current Ford Focus and width of a Mondeo. It is a 2 +2 coupe whose name is inspired by the word “evolution” The front will be used by future Ford models, but headlights will have different proportions. The interior is futuristic but it is possible that digital indicators and the display board with touch screen to reach in the future on mass production models. The number of buttons has been reduced and the interior was simplified. Ford Evos Concept has a plug-in hybrid propulsion system and is taken from the upcoming Ford C-Max Energy.
Land Rover DC100 Sport
It was the time for Land Rover to announce a successor of the famous model Defender. Land Rover DC100 Sport Concept predicts the next generation of Land Rover Defender. It was one of the most difficult missions for the British designers: how to replace a model that achieved legendary status. This first study will measure public’s reaction, and designers will have time to make changes because the production version of the new Defender will not appear earlier than 2015. The fact is that brand’s purists were looking forward to a new Defender but if it doesn’t comply with the elements that made it famous will probably be a big failure.
Peugeot HX1
Peugeot amazes again with an incredibly handsome concept. At Frankfurt Motor Show, the French brought the Peugeot HX1 Concept: a five meter long hybrid (16.4 feet). Peugeot HX1 it is a MPV-looking crossover that continues the line started with Peugeot SR1 and continued with the Peugeot EX1. Hard to say if the model it is only a design study or a future replacement for Peugeot 807. The design language is called Metamorphosis. Peugeot HX1 Concept it is an impressive automobile through its five meters (16.4 feet)in length and almost two (6.5 feet) wide. The concept uses a structure with six seats arranged in three rows. Propulsion system will be provided by a plug-in hybrid named Peugeot HYbrid4. It consists of a 204 hp diesel engine plus an electric motor of 95 hp. Peugeot announces an average consumption of just 3.2 litres/100 km (62 miles).
Alfa Romeo 4C
Alfa Romeo 4C Concept is not new, but the Italians thought that wasn’t admired enough in Geneva so they brought it in Frankfurt. The spectacular Alfa Romeo 4C coupe shows us how the series model that will be sold from 2012 will look. It has four meters (13 feet) in length, a central engine and only 850 kg. The engine will develop 200 hp enough for a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) and five seconds for 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph). The interior of Alfa Romeo 4C Concept it is likely to be very close to the interior of the series version.
Skoda Mission L
A surprise concept, announced late in pictures barely sketched it is the SkodaMission L. Skoda Mission L Concept seems to be a replacement for the famous Octavia, but an official press release announce it as a totally new model that will be inserted into range as a sixth line of models. Perhaps we have before us the new Skoda Felicia. Skoda Mission L Concept has design lines somewhat common and seem to continue to simplistic do so the identity of Octavia model. There are no official information about the technology or range of engines but it has been announced that the new Skoda Mission L will be sold only in Europe, Russia and China. The Indian market will receive a modified version, with a sedan body.
Eterniti Hemera
Eterniti it’s a new brand launched at Frankfurt Motor Show. It is made in Britain and wants to surprise with a new luxury SUV called Hemera. The first super-SUV of the world as it is presented by the British company, has lines worthy of a supercar. At Frankfurt we saw a pre-production concept of the Eterniti Hemera model. The production version of Eterniti Hemera Concept will most likely appear at the Geneva Motor Show 2012. Team of engineers working on Eterniti Hemera development is led by Alistair MacQueen, the same man who developed Jaguar XJ220. The famous British driver Johnny Herbert is also part of the team.
Ssangyong XIV-1
Ssangyong XIV-1 Concept is a compact crossover that the Korean manufacturer presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2011. XIV-1 Concept previews the new design language that the Korean manufacturer wants to adopt on the future series models. According to the Koreans, Ssangyong XIV-1 Concept will use the generous glazed surfaces and flowing lines for a not very aggressive look. From the features we mention the curved windshield, large C pillars and glass roof. Ssangyong XIV-1 is a class B compact SUV. The back doors will open in reverse, suicide-style.
Volkswagen Nils
Volkswagen surprised at IAA with a concept dedicated to urban mobility. Volkswagen Nils Concept it’s a single place electric automobile. It has a 20 hp engine and a range of 64 km. A fully charged battery lasts two hours. The weight of Nils Concept is around 500 kg (1102 lbs) and the maximum speed is 130 km/h (81 mph). Volkswagen Nils Concept was developed jointly with the German Ministry of Transportation. If Nils will reach mass production will be a vehicle designed to provide urban personal mobility of those who work only in the city. It is not excluded the possibility of renting by local authorities to the public of a fleet of such vehicles. If Volkswagen Nils will be offered in series, it will be the first competitor for the French and their Renault Twizy model.
