Gran Turismo 5 Discs Being Stamped Now, Says Creator

Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of the Gran Turismo driving simulator series for the PlayStation, is in Las Vegas for the SEMA Show, a trade show for the automotive aftermarket industry, otherwise known as the “wheels and babes” show.

Mr. Yamauchi has been a regular — and popular — presence at the show over the years, where he and his development team have demonstrated early versions of the game and even plucked cars off the show floor to include in the games. This year, however, he has been more of a lightning rod because the latest version of the series, Gran Turismo 5, has been delayed. Its latest release date was moved back last month to a rather vague “holiday season.”

When interviewed by Jalopnik at the show on Tuesday, Mr. Yamauchi did not give an exact date but said, “The discs are being stamped as we speak.”

He told AutoWeek that an announcement would come soon and relayed a story that might have had an impact on the decision to delay the game’s release. The story is about the first game he made, Motor Toon Grand Prix for the original PlayStation.

“The year and a half that it was in development, the last three months as the release date approached, myself and my staff were getting three hours of sleep a day to try and get the game done,” he said. “Near the end, the people from Sony came to our development studio and told us it was good enough and that we could release it. At the time, I probably wasn’t thinking very clearly, being as exhausted as I was, and I talked myself into thinking this was good enough and it went to release.

“But all the things I thought were not enough yet, the users said the exact same thing when the game came out. That was something I regretted very much when that happened because I knew it was coming. And that happened at the beginning of my career, and it was something I vowed would never happen again.”
