Boullier admits Heidfeld is the favourite

Nick Heidfeld is in pole position to replace the injured Robert Kubica in the Renault cockpit in the 2011 Formula One Championship.

The German has been without a drive since he left Sauber last year but would bring a wealth of experience to the Renault team.

The 33-year-old has started 172 races, although he is still without a win in the sport but has finished second on eight occasions.

"Nick is here to be evaluated," Renault team boss Eric Boullier told Autosport.

"Once we have finished our assessment of him, if we are happy with Nick, then we keep Nick. If we are not, we go to Barcelona and we test some other drivers.

"We have to develop this car from scratch, so the obvious choice of driver is an experienced one."

Kubica is currently undergoing a series of operations after suffering serious arm, leg and hand injuries when his car crashed on a minor rally near Genoa on Sunday.

The Pole will definitely miss the first three months of the Championship and could be ruled out for the entire season such is the extent of his injuries.
