Doctor: We will know more in six days

Robert Kubica's surgeon has revealed it will take "at least six days" before they know whether the Pole has successfully come through his surgery.

Kubica underwent a seven-hour operation at the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure on Sunday afternoon after severely damaging his right arm in a rally accident in Italy.

The Renault driver's "right forearm was cut in two places, with significant lesions to the bones and the tendons" resulting in his surgeon's having to "rebuild the functions of the forearm."

He also sustained arm and leg fractures and was placed in a medically induced coma overnight.

"I have finally talked to him and Robert has shown he understands everything perfectly," Morelli was quoted by IVG.it. "His cerebral activity is intact and we are extremely relieved.

"This really gives good hope. Obviously he feels a lot of pain to his leg and hand. He'll need time."

Rossello is optimistic about Kubica's chances although he admits it will take a week before they will know for sure.

"The night has been very quiet, the patient is stable.

"The hand seems to respond well to stimulus, and vascularity looks re-activated.

"It's too soon to say whether the operation went well and, as I said yesterday, we'll need between five and seven days to understand if the limb's blood supply is okay and a lot more time to evaluate its functionality.

"It was a difficult operation but the final result is extremely satisfying."

Renault team boss Eric Boullier echoed Morelli's view that his driver's progress had been encouraging, and even refused to rule Kubica out of the whole of the coming F1 season despite the doctors' forecast of a year on the sidelines.

"This morning it was really fine - they needed 24 hours to make sure he recovered completely and it looks like this morning they are all happy," Boullier said.

"He is definitely out for a couple of months. The recovery will be quicker than one year, but it is a bit early to know exactly how long he will need."
