Renault: Rallying is in Kubica's heart

Eric Boullier has defended Renault's decision to allow Robert Kubica to compete in a rally that left the Pole seriously injured.

According to his doctors, Kubica looks likely to miss the entire 2011 Championship after suffering a severe hand injury on the opening stage of the Ronda di Andora Rally in Italy on Sunday.

The Pole underwent a seven-hour operation to save his right hand, however, it remains to be seen whether he will gain full mobility.

Kubica's accident, just five weeks before the start of the new F1 season, has raised some questions about Renault's judgement in allowing their star driver to take part in a high-risk sport.

Boullier, though, insists permitting Kubica to do something he loves was the right call.

"We let him do it because rallying is in his heart," the Renault team boss told Italian news agency ANSA.

"Rally driving is vital for Robert and his state of mind - we know the risks and so does he. We don't want a robot or corporate driver."
