Whitmarsh: There's more to come

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has warned his rivals that there is a lot more to the MP4-26 than meets the eye.

McLaren's 2011 challenger was launched in Berlin on Friday, and immediately the team's U-shaped sidepods caused a bit of a stir but according to Whitmarsh, they are just the beginning.

"Be warned - you haven't seen it all," said Whitmarsh.

"I think there are some really interesting bits on the car you can see, bits and pieces that we have hidden from you and our competitors.

"Formula One is about continuously developing, so we will start testing next week and by that stage the car will move on suddenly and we have got some fantastic innovations.

"It never ceases to amaze me, I think people will look at the regulations, which are much more constraining around the diffuser area, but that just drives creativity.

"Certainly still for me one of the more thrilling parts of my job is to go and look at what much cleverer people, and much cleverer engineers, are doing [with] these creative ideas and things that are really interesting, challenging and have some risk.

"But we are in the business where if you are not innovating, you will not be competitive.

"So quite naturally we have not shown you, or our competitors, our full hand today. I think there is enough interesting things to see and it is a beautifully packed car."

Having failed to win either the Drivers' or Constructors' titles last year, the Briton is confident that his squad are well placed heading into the coming season.

"I'm brimming with enthusiasm and passion again about this year's car and I think we will have a fantastic season, and I think it will continue to develop race by race," he said.
