Eco Tourism & Adventures

Thailand has long been known for the rich diversity of its attractions.

The diverse geography, from mountainous forests particular in the North and West to the beautiful southern and eastern coastline, offers an impressive range of outdoor and sporting activities.

Those in need of soft and relaxing holidays can choose a wide rage of activities focusing on spa treatments and health & wellness.

Whatever your choice may be, there’s bound to be an activity tailored especially for you.

Eco and adventure tourism involves responsible activities in natural areas that conserve the environment and consider the quality of life of the local people.

Thailand offers a variety of natural attractions. National parks, wildlife, magnificent rainforests and beautiful beaches. Whatever you prefer, Thailand is the optimal choice for a green and adventurous experience.

You can rock climb or bicycle through mangroves, hike through the largest areas of protected forest in Southeast Asia, and observe more than 900 different species of birds. You can also enjoy kayaking in the lagoons surrounded by limestone cliffs and dive in the most dazzling places in the Andaman Sea.

Climbing
The cornerstone of climbing in Thailand is in the Southern province of Krabi, and Rai Le Beach in particular. Around Rai Le Beach there are more then 700 routes available onto the faces of the cliffs. The grades of these routes vary in difficulty from 5a (which is child’s play) to 8c (which is extremely challenging) according to the French system.

Other good climbing locations are in the central region in Uthai Thani, near Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, or limestone mountains in Kanchanaburi, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Kiri Khan.

Cycling
What a better way to fully appreciate the local lifestyle than by pedalling through those narrow roads that tourist buses can’t penetrate? It is also a good way to enjoy the natural wilderness and historical ruins.

Cycling is gaining popularity and is available throughout Thailand. You can start an easy-going bicycle trip in Bangkok through areas surrounding the Grand Palace and its suburban area.

Mountain biking is a more rigorous type of cycling on off-track terrains, found mostly in the steeper terrain of the north. The mountain biking routes are mainly located in national parks, however, more and more new routes have been opened up by specialists, some of which have not been officially mapped out, making for formidable challenges.

Best time for biking is during the cool season from November to January. Avoid the rainy season from June to October and in April, as it is the hottest month.

For biking guides and expeditions in Thailand:

Trekking
Trekking is mostly available at national parks. Depending on your interest, the national parks offer a great number of activities within the protected areas. You can go on jungle treks, wildlife observation, bird watching, mountain biking and river rafting. Each national park is managed independently. It is best to consult a travel company specialising in ecotourism and adventure travel to identify the best itinerary tailored for you.

Some treks incorporate elephant safaris and other modes of transport. An elephant safari is an interesting option. It’s quite an experience to ride on an elephant and take part in its mighty strength and agility while lurching through the forests. Most elephant camps that offer treks are based in Chiang Mai, but elephant rides are also offered in most tourist destinations.
