A very real desire to make up for the disappointment of Melbourne
Melbourne, 28 March – Eighteen points is without a doubt not the sort of haul that lives up to our expectations. No one at Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro can hide from the reality that this was not the start to the championship we wanted or hoped for. Having said that, there’s no point making out it is a catastrophe: better to concentrate our efforts on analysing the reasons why the 150° Italia did not run at its real potential. That’s why Stefano Domenicali and the Scuderia’s senior engineers flew back to Europe immediately after the race in Albert Park, while most of the personnel stayed on in Melbourne, prior to flying on to Sepang at the weekend.
There are still some positives to be drawn from yesterday’s race. True enough, the two fastest race laps came courtesy of the two Ferrari men, with Felipe setting a time of 1.28.947 on lap 55 with soft tyres, while Fernando stopped the clocks in 1.29.487 on lap 49 on the Prime tyres. Those figures need to be considered carefully, because drivers can find themselves in different situations during the race and, in the closing stages, when fuel loads have dropped, those who are not fighting for position have no need to push on, but it’s still worth noting that the third best time came from Webber, who did a 1.29.600 on lap 50.
The Maranello cars definitely delivered a better performance in the race than they had in qualifying. That wouldn’t take much, the critics might say, but it is a positive note nevertheless. Fernando’s pace was good enough to let him fight for a podium finish, which is something when you consider that one of the Red Bulls, Vettel’s to be precise, was running on a different level to everyone else. It was also true that Felipe’s tyres suffered an overall degradation that was much more significant than his team-mate’s: the management of the Pirelli tyres and finding the right way to get the most out of them will be one of the key factors this season. Clearly, there is plenty for the men from Maranello to get their teeth into and there is an absolute determination to react immediately so as to turn up in much better shape in Malaysia.
Tanta voglia di rifarsi dopo la delusione di Melbourne
Melbourne, 28 marzo – Diciotto punti non sono un bottino all’altezza delle aspettative e su questo non ci piove. Nessuno alla Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro si nasconde dietro un dito: non è stato l’inizio di campionato che si voleva e si sperava. Detto questo, è inutile fare subito i catastrofisti: meglio concentrare le energie sull’analisi dei motivi che non hanno permesso alla 150° Italia di mostrare il suo reale potenziale. E’ anche per questa ragione che tanto Stefano Domenicali quanto i vertici tecnici della Scuderia sono volati in Europa subito dopo il termine della gara dell’Albert Park mentre il grosso della squadra è rimasto a Melbourne, da dove partirà il prossimo fine settimana alla volta di Sepang.
Per quanto riguarda la corsa di ieri, qualche nota positiva si è comunque vista. E’ vero infatti che i due giri più veloci della gara sono stati appannaggio dei due ferraristi, con Felipe autore di un tempo di 1.28.947 al giro 55 con gomme morbide e Fernando che ha fermato i cronometri sull’1.29.487 al giro 49 con pneumatici “prime”. E’ un dato da prendere sempre con le molle, perché i piloti si possono trovare in condizioni diverse durante la gara e chi nelle fasi finali, quando la benzina a bordo è ormai poca, non è in lotta per una posizione non ha la necessità di spingere, ma vale comunque la pena notare che la terza miglior prestazione appartiene a Webber, con il tempo di 1.29.600, fatto segnare al giro 50.
Sicuramente la prestazione in gara delle monoposto di Maranello è stata migliore rispetto a quella mostrata in qualifica. Ci voleva poco, diranno i critici, ma è comunque una nota positiva. Il ritmo di Fernando è stato competitivo per lottare per le piazze d’onore del podio, considerato che anche ieri una Red Bull, quella di Vettel, era irraggiungibile da chiunque. Va capito anche perché sulla monoposto di Felipe si è avuto un degrado complessivamente più significativo degli pneumatici rispetto al compagno di squadra: la gestione delle gomme Pirelli e l’individuazione del modo di sfruttarle al meglio sarà una delle chiavi della stagione. Come si vede, c’è tanta carne al fuoco per gli uomini di Maranello, cui sicuramente non manca la voglia di reagire subito e di presentarsi in Malesia in una condizione migliore.
