RATCHAPHRUEK ROYAL PARK SONGKRAN THAI NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS & ORCHID EXHIBITION

At Ratchaphruek Royal Park in Chiang Mai

The Ratchaphruek Royal Park Songkran Thai New Year celebrations and Orchid Exhibition is being jointly organized by park authorities in partnership with Chiang Mai province, the Chiang Mai Culture Society, the Tourism Authority of Thailand Chiang Mai office, the Chiang Mai Provincial Office of Tourism and Sports and the Chiang Mai Orchid Organization Under Royal Patronage.

Highlights and Activities
- Floral splendour during the Songkran Thai New Year Celebrations. The blooming of the flowering plants in the park are timed to coincide with the Songkran Thai New Year celebrations.
- Orchid Exhibition. Interesting exhibits on the cultivation of new varieties of orchids as well as local flora and new hybrids
- The ritual bathing of sacred Buddha images, an auspicious way to start out the new year.
- A traditional Northern-style open-air market or kaad mua krua hom
- Live demonstrations featuring the making of traditional Northern Thai or Lanna-style ceremonial flags called tung, traditional Lanna lanterns called khome, and wood-carving
- A 30-metre water tunnel
- Songkran water-splashing and the observance of other ancient Lanna customs and traditions associated with the celebration of the Thai New Year
- Rot Nam Dam Hua procession and ceremony on National Day for the Elderly on 17 April. Scented lustral water and other ritual offerings are presented to elders and individuals held in high esteem in a gesture of respect.
