TAT HELPS LOCAL ADMINISTRATIONS UPGRADE TOURISM MARKETING, MANAGEMENT EXPERTISE

Bangkok, 1 March, 2011 — The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is forging ahead with a nationwide effort to help provincial, district, and municipal officials to have a better understanding of the travel and tourism industry, thereby encouraging them to develop the right quality of products and facilitate their marketing efforts.

The project began in 2010 and will be continued all throughout this year. It will help local administrative officials improve the competitiveness of their respective areas and prepare them to handle both domestic and international tourists.

TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni said, “This is very much in line with our ‘balanced strategy’ policy to ensure that the true benefits of travel and tourism trickle down to those who need it the most. By upgrading the ability of local administrative officials to promote and manage their respective tourism sectors, we will be going a long way towards enhancing the competitive advantages of the country as a whole.”

Under the project, TAT will train local administrative officials to understand how to prepare tourism marketing strategies and plans, create integrated marketing promotion networks between local administrative offices and strengthen their knowledge and understanding of tourism promotion.

In turn, this will help them to sustain their local tourist attractions and upgrade the professionalism of their promotional and marketing activities.

TAT will provide local officials with all the supporting manuals, handbooks and documentation, organise meetings and workshops to impart the knowledge, and take the local administrative officials on familiarisation trips to see fine examples of tourism products and promotional activities.

In 2010, TAT organised five such meetings which were attended by 379 officials. The meetings attracted a high level of attendance such as; the chairman, and vice-chairman of provincial administrations, district administrations, and municipalities from various regions of Thailand.

In 2011, TAT organised a meeting during 8-11 February 2011, in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province for the benefit of local administrative officials in Chacheongsao, Chainat, Pathum Thani, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Samut Prakan, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Suphan Buri and Ang Thong provinces.

A second meeting was held during 21-24 February in Kanchanaburi province for local administrative officials of Nakhon Pathom, Samut Songkram, Samut Sakhon, Prachuap Kiri Khan, Kanchanaburi, Nonthaburi, Phetchaburi, and Ratchaburi provinces.

Mr Suraphon said, “This project meets all the national policy objectives. It will create jobs and ensure a fairer distribution of income, decentralise power to the provincial, and district levels, and help meet changing customer demands well into the future.

“All the knowledge imparted to the local people stresses the importance of ensuring a sustainable tourism industry, especially in terms of the preservation of environmental and cultural heritage,” he added.
