FIA European GT3 Series - Difficult debut for the 458 Italia GT3

Portimao, 7 May- The International Algarve Circuit in Portugal saw the first of six rounds of the European FIA GT3 championship get underway with Race 1 this afternoon. The podium was an all-BMW affair with Edward Sandstrom-Abdulaziz Al Faisal crossing the line first ahead of the other Need for Speed team car, driven by Csaba Walter-Claudia Hurtgen and the Faster Racing DB Motorsport of Hoevert Vos-Jeroen den Boer.

Results did not live up to expectations for the Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 cars entered, despite the fact that yesterday in qualifying, Francesco Castellacci (AF Corse) took pole position in a time of 1.45.722, thus showing that the car has great potential. Unfortunately, the Castellacci-Leo duo could not take part in the race after a collision with another car in the second qualifying session. Of the Ferraris, the best result came courtesy of the 458 Italia GT3 of Daniel Brown and Glynn Geddie (AF Corse) who came home eighth, while in thirteenth and twentieth respectively were the MTECH cars in the hands of Duncan Cameron-Matthew Griffin and Paul Rees-Luca Pirri.

Race 2 takes place tomorrow at 11.15 with the 458 Italia GT3s of Griffin-Cameron and Castellacci-Leo (AF Corse) starting from second and third places behind the Mercedes if Mike Parisy-Philippe Giaque (Graff Racing.)
