BMW X6 will have a new rival: Mercedes Benz GLS

A source within the Mercedes-Benz announced that the brand will launch a rival for BMW X6 in 2014. The SUV is Mercedes GLS and will also be made in the AMG version.

Mercedes-Benz is preparing a new SUV called GLS, which will rival the BMW X6, according to sources quoted. Mercedes GLS will provide four seats, shares platform with the next generation Mercedes ML and will debut in 2014. The future GLS share its platform with the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, emphasizes that source. Also, Audi prepares to fight the X6, with a new SUV that could be called Audi Q6 and is expected to debut in 2016. The new generation of Range Rover Sport will debut in 2013.

“After closely monitoring sales trends, we’ve concluded there is potential for an additional off-road model with a more sporting emphasis than the new M-class,” an insider revealed last week.

The future Mercedes-Benz GLS will have a stronger roof line that will remind of the CLS, while giving up a place in the back provide extra sportiness. Some of the aesthetic elements on this model will be inspired by the second generation of the Mercedes CLS. The engine range will be taken from ML and includes the supercharged V6 and V8, while entry-level will be a 3.0-liter V6 CDI.

Mercedes will create an AMG version for future GLS, which will fight with the BMW X6 M. This model gets the new V8 twin-turbo 5.5-liter, which replaced the 6208 cc aspirated unit. Since its debut in 2009, BMW X6 sold over 120,000 copies.
