FDA - Jules Bianchi back in Budapest hoping to make amends

Exactly a year ago, Jules Bianchi went through the worst day of his young career at the Hungaroring circuit. An banal accident, immediately after the start of race 1, ended in a fractured vertebra. First indications were not that good and it looked as though he would be away from the race track for a while. But Bianchi surprised everyone, making a very quick recovery and was back for the very next round at Spa, just three weeks later.

“I have contrasting feelings when I look back at Budapest,” said Jules today. “Of course the accident springs to mind from last year, but also my first pole position in the European Formula Renault series in 2007. It was very satisfying, given it was my very first season in single-seaters. This year I want to add to those good memories.”

Bianchi arrives at the Hungarian track on the back of a strong showing at the last two rounds of the championship. In Silverstone, Jules took a win and a pole and again at the Nurburgring, he made it to the podium in Race 2, picking up an important second place. Overall, he has scored an impressive 24 points in the last two events and is back among the front runners in the championship.

“Going into the last two races, I said I was no longer looking at the classification,” he explained. “And I would like to continue not adding up the figures until the final weekend at Monza. Today, we are back to believing a top three finish in the series is possible, which looked a very difficult target back in June. But now, I am only thinking about the Budapest weekend, about the need to do well in qualifying, given the track does not suit climbing up the order or overtaking.”

Budapest is the seventh of nine rounds on the calendar and the weekend follows the usual GP2 timetable. Free practice is on Friday at 11.55 (30 minutes) followed by qualifying at 15.55 (30 minutes.) Race 1 takes place on Saturday at 15.40, running over 37 laps. The weekend racing ended with Race 2 on Sunday morning, starting at 10.30 for 28 laps.
