We began our latest trip on the LRGP global F1 tour yesterday morning at 9.25am as we departed our hotel near the Nürburgring..
Our plan for the day was to reach Vienna, some 500 miles south-east of our temporary Germany home. Reach the Austrian capital before evening set-in, then just a couple of hours’ drive further to Budapest on Tuesday, that was the plan.
The drive was a pleasant one. A convoy of LRGP vehicles clocking up the miles towards Mozart’s former home; signs for Frankfurt came and went, München, Linz then finally Wien (which, we gathered meant Vienna; they pronounce their ’w’s’ like ’v’s’ you see!)
Shortly after Frankfurt, we had passed the Team Lotus and Virgin Marussia trucks as we cruised along the E41. By Würzburg, we had seen off Force India and even Red Bull. If this was anything to go by, the omens were looking good for the coming weekend in Budapest.
After a couple of pit stops, we joined the River Danube and drove parallel to it for a while. The first thing that strikes you about the Danube is its enormity, its width. It is also stagerring to think that it runs right the way from Germany to the Black Sea.
We weren’t quite travelling that far, but our rotatory driving system was indication enough that we were tracking quite some distance in one day.
We finally reached Vienna at about 5.30pm local time; a full day’s driving rewarded by the fact that we had reached what is considered one of continental Europe’s finest cities in time for supper.
For Tuesday, it’s just the matter of 134 miles. Next stop, Budapest.
