Darren Heath's most memorable McLaren shot
Darren Heath, whose pictures of Vodafone McLaren Mercedes in action can be seen on McLaren.com after every GP, has been shooting Formula 1 for 23 years as of this year’s Santander British Grand Prix and is acknowledged as one of the greatest sports photographers in the world.
And although he takes about 2000 shots at each race, there are some he’s more proud of than others, so we asked him to pick his most memorable McLaren shot from a British Grand Prix.
His final choice was a picture he took way back in 1997, of Mika Hakkinen on the ragged edge.
“I took this at the Abbey chicane”, says Darren. “Mika was powering his way out of the corner while heading towards Bridge, which was awesome when it was still part of the circuit. I miss it, as do all the F1 photographers, because it was great to shoot the cars there.
“Mika was right on the edge for this one – he managed to put two wheels well on the grass as he came out of the chicane. He was always a driver who gave it his all and this shot shows just how much he had to give! That’s why it’s my favourite – it shows just how close he was to losing it but he still made it round. He has his foot hard to the floor as mud, dust and grass is flung skywards by his McLaren MP4-12's tyres.”
