Button seeks a change in fortune
Tuesday 26th July 2011
Jenson Button is hoping his historic 200th GP in Hungary this weekend will bring about an end to his run of wretched form.
The milestone is all the more significant as the Hungaroring is the scene of Button's maiden Formula One victory in 2006.
But the 31-year-old goes into the poignant race wondering when his luck might turn as the last three races since his rousing victory in Canada have been a disaster.
"The frustrating thing is in leading up to Canada I had a great race in Barcelona, a great one in Monaco, and then obviously a great one in Canada," said Button.
"But since then it's been crap. The pace wasn't there in Valencia, where I had a KERS failure, then at Silverstone the wheel fell off, and in Germany I had a hydraulics failure, so it's not been great.
"They're all things I couldn't have done anything about, so all I can do now is hope we get some reliability for the next few races.
"Moving forward, the next one is my 200th, a very special race for me, and lots of memories from the previous 199 grands prix.
"It's crazy really. I'm only 31 and I will have done 200 grands prix.
"But there is a lot more to come, a lot more to look forward to in the future, building with confidence all the time, with my attitude towards racing, and really enjoying it.
"I didn't finish yesterday's race, I wasn't fighting for the lead - although I should have been really, I should have been at the front - but I still had fun, I still enjoyed it.
"So I'm looking forward to many more fun races after my 200th."
It is also the experience gained from the previous 199 races which ensures Button can at least get to grips with his current woes, aided and abetted by girlfriend Jessica Michibata.
"There's only one week to the next race, which is good," added Button, who heads to Hungary in contrasting fortunes to team-mate Lewis Hamilton who took the chequered flag in Germany.
"I get to see my missus (Michibata) as well this weekend, she'll be there at the next race, so I'll get over it pretty quickly.
"There's also a great atmosphere within the team because Lewis did a great job, as did the team, so it's difficult to be down and negative.
"We're proving we are quick enough to fight, that it's not just down to luck or strange circumstances we win races. The outright pace is there."
