BRUNO MANIA

26/08/2011

Everywhere he goes, people are asking. Asking questions about how it feels to be in the R31, to be back in Formula 1 and to be back with a competitive team.

Well ladies and gents, Bruno-mania has well and truly arrived, and everyone wants a piece of action. There, however, the similarity stops because no-one is asking who he is, or where he comes from. They all know he is Bruno Senna from Brazil. Suddenly, after a few weeks out of the spotlight we’re very much back in it. It’s been the talk of the paddock, and we saw both Bruno and Vitaly at the FIA Press Conference yesterday afternoon.

It’s one thing being out of the spotlight, and quite another being in it and, at the moment, we are very much in it due to our new line-up at the Belgian Grand Prix. Bruno’s been in Formula 1 before, of course, but this time it’s different. As Bruno has said already this week, he’s with a competitive team this time around. He’s with a team that are in the mix, surrounded by other cars on the grid, and a team who has two podiums to its name already this season; a team who very much hopes to secure top ten positions in qualifying tomorrow.

What we’re seeing here in Spa-Francorchamps is not quite the level of Beatle-mania - that will have to wait until we get to Brazil - but it is a big level of support he’s getting here. It’s amazing what a seat in a car does. There are fans, there are autographs, there are photos and there are smiles from the man himself. He’s a popular figure here in Spa-Francorchamps, no doubt about it.

As an F1 venue to claim his seat in the car, Spa-Francorchamps is not bad at all. He’s a self-confessed lover of Spa-Francorchamps; the challenges that it throws up are numerous, not least the fearsome Eau Rouge.

It is tomorrow that presents Bruno with his big test; his first qualifying session with Lotus Renault GP is sure to be his biggest test yet in LRGP colours. And again, Sunday will offer another first; his first race in the black and gold. Over the course of the next two days, the hype will crank up another notch.
