Formula One is still on its summer break until the start of the Belgium Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, but nevertheless, there was a lot happening last weekend in the world of motor racing.
Nico and Michael joined Mercedes-Benz DTM drivers in a visit to Stuttgart’s Schlossplatz, where, as part of a Mercedes-Benz motor racing family day out, they signed autographs, spoke to fans and answered questions, even taking the wheel at one point to demonstrate their special skills.
Win at the Formula 3 Masters, Zandvoort
While MERCEDES GP PETRONAS drivers were spending a relaxing day with fans, aspiring young driver were battling in the Formula 3 Masters race at Zandvoort for one of the season’s most prestigious titles. Since the first Formula 3 Masters event in 1991, drivers such as David Coulthard, Lewis Hamilton, Paul Di Resta and Nico Hülkenberg have featured among the winners.
19-year-old Swedish driver Felix Rosenqvist from Mücke Motorsport won this season’s race at the Circuit Park Zandvoort. The Dallara Mercedes driver secured his win with a five-second advantage on Marco Wittmann and Kevin Magnussen.
This year marked Rosenqvist’s move from the German Formula 3 Championship to the Formula 3 Euro Series, having notched up two wins and eight podium finishes. He’s now placed fifth in the overall standings after six out of a total of nine race weekends. Roberto Mehri leads the championship from fellow Prema Powerteam driver, Daniel Juncadella. Both their cars run the Mercedes-Benz Formula 3 engine.
Two podium finishes in the Spielberg GT Masters
Early May saw the return of Mercedes-Benz and DTM to the Austrian province of Styria, and it was here at the new Red Bull Ring that the ADAC GT Masters made its debut last weekend. A total of nine Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 gullwing racing cars lined up at the start.
In the first race, Lance David Arnold and former Formula One test driver Andreas Zuber secured second place on the podium with their Primajob Team Heico SLS AMG GT3. Florian Stoll and Thomas Jäger came home in fourth place for MS Racing.
In the second race, Harald Proczyk and Dominik Baumann were third on the podium. A total of five SLS AMG gullwing GT3s finished in the Top Ten; four of the five were placed among the first seven cars home.
