The Glamour and Grit of Enzo Ferrari’s Early Racing History Featured in a Short Film

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (26 Sep 2011): Take a trip back in time with Enzo Ferrari through the silver screen with ‘Coppa di Sicilia’ – an exclusive short film specially commissioned and screened at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi’s Cinema Maranello.

The period short film has just been awarded an Ottocar by the international automotive film and multimedia festival AutoVision at the International Auto Show in Frankfurt. Ottocar trophies are annually awarded to the most outstanding productions in automotive films, with this year laudeing for their high quality of production and focus on story telling.

Set in 1920s Italy, ‘Coppa de Sicilia’ is a lookback at the rough yet romantic racing culture that showed the seeds of Enzo Ferrari’s love for the races. Recreating one of the many races that punctuated the legend’s early life as a driver for the Italian car marque Alfa Romeo, the production perfectly captures the spirit of the era, with vintage costumes, classic Italian cars and authentic period props specially created for the film.

“The film has all the elements that make for a great story – history, nostalgia, humour, a picturesque setting and an Italian hero who takes home the prize,” said Andy Keeling, Park Manager of Ferrari World Abu Dhabi.

Keeling continued, “Coppa di Sicilia takes visitors back to a period in Enzo Ferrari’s past that isn’t really common knowledge. It’s not until Enzo Ferrari had considerable success as a driver racing that he was inspired to actually go ahead and design his own Ferrari race car.” Admirers of classic automobiles can take a closer look at the Alfa Romeo produced and used in the making of ‘Coppa di Sicilia’ at the Ferrari Past and Present boutique at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi.

Shot on the rural roads and rocky mountain trails of Sicily, period film buffs will be impressed by the level of attention to detail expressed on screen. “The idea was to give viewers a chance to go back in time and we wanted to make it all seem very real, with a touch of humour of course,” said Antonio Ghini, Creative Director, Ferrari.

The period props stay true to the era in every way possible – the cars used in most of the in the racing scenes are all authentic, the costumes were sourced to reflect the prevailing fashions, even the newspapers the spectators are reading in the film have been reprinted with similar content to those published at the time.

The film was produced exclusively for screening at Cinema Maranello, the plush cinema at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, constructed in the style of a grand old Italian picture house. The nostalgic content of the film inspired the look and feel of the cinema which evokes the lush nature of old theatres.

‘Coppa di Sicilia’ was one of only two films awarded a Gold Nail at the 2011 Art Directors Club Creativity Competition Competition held in Frankfurt earlier this year, and the only one to take home a gold in its competiting category of Short Film/ Special format for moving images.

Visitors to the world’s only Ferrari-branded theme park can catch all the action onscreen at Cinema Maranello, one of the popular attractions at Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, where high-definition screenings of ‘Coppa di Sicilia’ run throughout the Park’s opening hours on the UAE’s largest HD cinema screen.
