ALMS – A difficult start for Ferrari in Baltimore

Maranello, 3 September – The first ever Baltimore Grand Prix street rce, the seventh round of the American Le Mans Series, starts today at 16.30, but in qualifying to decide grid positions, the Risi Competizione team did not exactly get to appreciate the appeal of the new venue. After an excellent start that would have seen it take sixth place on the GT grid, Jaime Melo had his time disallowed after a collision with the Bergmeister/Long Porsche. The accident not only damaged the rear right wheel and some bodywork on the 458 Italia GT2, it also led to the penality that put the Houston-based team to the back of the grid.

The result of the race, on a track that is new to everyone, is therefore hard to predict, after just 65 minutes of qualifying were available, instead of the planned two hours. “It will not be easy racing here,” said the Finnish driver Toni Vilander, Melo’s team-mate. There are many tricky corners where one will have to be very careful to avoid getting caught out.”

The Extreme Speed Motorsport Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 will start ninth in the hands of Sharp-Van Overbeek, while its sister car, driven by Brown-Cosmo set the thirteenth best time in class.
