REVIEW OF THE MERCEDES-BENZ RACING WEEKEND

OTHER TEAM NEWS // 05.09.2011

While at Monza’s Royal Park, MERCEDES GP PETRONAS team members plus drivers Nico and Michael prepare for this weekend’s last Formula One race of the season to take place in Europe, Brands Hatch played host last Sunday to Mercedes-Benz’ DTM teams, and the typical British weather ran true to form: heavy rain greeted drivers for the start of the race around the shortest circuit on the DTM calendar.

Gary Paffett was best-placed C-Class driver in P4 after a difficult race marred by heavy rain at times and poor visibility. Michael’s brother Ralf Schumacher came home immediately behind him in fifth position. This was Ralf’s fourth time in the points this season – he’s claimed two podium finishes so far. Bruno Spengler and Jamie Green also secured championship points in their 70th DTM race by finishing seventh and eighth respectively.

Spengler is now one point behind leader Martin Tomczyk (Audi) in the drivers’ standings. “We are now almost level on points at the top of the table with just three races to go this season. The battle for the title starts here and Bruno Spengler is in with an excellent chance,” said Norbert Haug, Vice-President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport.

GT Masters: Victory at the Lausitzring

Rounds eleven and twelve of the ADAC GT Masters were contested last weekend at the Lausitzring. A total of nine Mercedes-Benz AMG SLS GT3s lined up for the start.

In the first race on Saturday, four gullwings finished in the Top Ten. Lance David Arnold and Andreas Zuber were the best-placed SLS AMG GT3 drivers in fifth position.

At Sunday’s second race, two gullwings secured a place on the podium: Thomas Jäger and Florian Stoll from Team MS Racing claimed victory, whilst Zuber and Arnold came home third, rounding off a doubly successful day for Mercedes. In the 33-lap race, four SLS AMG GT3s figured in the Top 8. It was the second GT Masters win for the SLS AMG GT3.
