Final practice - Vettel heads Red Bull one-two

Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber maintained the upper hand for Red Bull in the final practice session here in Monza this morning, the German acing his team mate by 0.364s with a lap of 1m 23.170s compared to the Australian’s 1m 23.534s.

Behind them the barrel was still close, with Felipe Massa bouncing his Ferrari up to third with 1m 23.668s, just ahead of Lewis Hamilton on 1m 23.741s for McLaren. Jenson Button was right behind him on 1m 23.787s, with Nico Rosberg sixth on 1m 23.875s ahead of Mercedes team mate Michael Schumacher with 1m 24.114s. Fernando Alonso was eighth on 1m 24.133s.

Force India were again on strong form, with Adrian Sutil ninth on 1m 24.543s ahead of team mate Paul di Resta on 1m 24.581s. Bruno Senna was 11th for Renault on 1m 24.853s with team mate Vitaly Petrov on his tail with 1m 24.889s. Sergio Perez was 13th for Sauber with 1m 24.948s, with Kamui Kobayashi next in the sister C30 on 1m 25.261s.

The symmetry was interrupted as Rubens Barrichello took 15th for Williams in 1m 25.319s, ahead of the Toro Rossos of Jaime Alguersuari and Sebastien Buemi on 1m 25.426s and 1m 25.439s respectively, as Pastor Maldonado followed on 1m 25.539s in the second Williams.

Jarno Trulli continued to lead the Lotus challenge with 1m 27.328s ahead of team mate Heikki Kovalainen on 1m 27.491s, while a late improvement put Jerome d’Ambrosio’s Virgin ahead of Tonio Liuzzi’s HRT; the Belgian lapped in 1m 28.186s, the Italian 1m 28.441s. Timo Glock was 23rd in his Virgin on 1m 28.962s, as Daniel Ricciardo brought up the rear with 1m 30.316s in his HRT.

The scene is thus now set for what many believe will be one of the closest qualifying sessions of the year.
