Vettel enjoys hometown celebration in Heppenheim
Sebastian Vettel returned to his hometown of Heppenheim in Germany on Saturday to celebrate his 2011 drivers’ title, with around 30,000 fans turning out to applaud their local hero’s achievement in becoming Formula One’s youngest double world champion.
Accompanied by motorcycle outriders, Vettel blasted his Red Bull through the narrow streets of Heppenheim, before stepping from the cockpit and standing atop the car in true parc ferme-style to greet the crowds.
“I am travelling around the world a lot and we have a lot of fans but I have never seen so many Red Bull caps before,” said 24-year-old Vettel. “It couldn’t be better. Thank you so much. Last year in Heppenheim was already unbelievable but today is even better. You made my day. Thank you.”
It was a day full of festivities, complete with music, break dancing and the obligatory slot-car racing. Among those present to share them was Germany’s other recently-crowned motorsport champion, DTM’s Martin Tomczyk.
Summing up his opinion of Vettel for Red Bull, Tomaczyk described his compatriot as, “Fast, young, dynamic - and just a cool guy!”
