Great race by Alonso in Korea
20/10/2011
The Spanish driver claimed a spectacular fifth place in a race in which he strove right to the finish line, and confirmed his bid for the runners-up spot in the championship.
Fernando Alonso once again treated us to a fantastic start in Korea. The Spaniard was as competitive as we now expect, and succeeded in overtaking one of the leading lights of this weekend, Jenson Button. That put Fernando fifth, behind Vettel, Hamilton, Webber and Massa.
By lap 13 Fernando was going faster than Felipe Massa and did everything he could to overtake him. It was after the pit stop that Fernando managed to slip into fourth place. On lap 17 the Spaniard successfully avoided the accident which occurred between Petrov and Schumacher, and was able to continue on his way without any trouble in eighth place.
On lap 27, Fernando managed to overtake Rosberg, putting him sixth ahead of Alguersuari. On lap 38 the Spanish driver completed his last stop and fitted soft tyres. He once again found himself in a tussle with Massa when he emerged, a duel which the Spaniard won to move into fifth.
Fernando put the icing on an excellent race in the final stint, setting a number of consecutive fastest laps and getting ever closer to Button. Unfortunately on the last lap the Spanish driver announced over the radio that he was giving up the fight, although much of the work had been done: he ultimately finished fifth at the end of a spectacular race.
Alonso: "It was a fun race"
Fernando Alonso remarked that despite all their efforts they are still behind the two leading teams at the moment. "Fifth and sixth is our position when both the Red Bulls and both the McLaren-Mercedes finish," said Alonso at the Yeongam circuit.
As for the race, he felt that: "To be honest it was a really fun race. Right at the start there were a few of us almost touching. There were lots of duels going on". By which the Spaniard meant Petrov and Schumacher, Webber and Button, or his own tussle with Massa, in which he ultimately claimed the spoils.
"I said before that there were four races left to enjoy, with overtaking and duels on the track, and this was one of them," he added, with reference to the fantastic races seen both in Japan and in Korea. "At the start of the race we found it difficult because the soft tyres degraded very quickly, but it got better towards the end," he concluded.
