MOTORSHOW REPORT 2011 LOS ANGELES: Life's Extravagances

Performance-oriented cars stole the limelight at this year's Californian auto show.

Ford Shelby GT500

The Mustang gets more venom, this time courtesy of a 650hp 5.8-litre supercharged V8 straight from the factory. The souped-up American muscle car is capable of doing more than 300kph.

Jaguar XKR-S Convertible

After launching the fastest ever Jag in XKR coupe form, the Brits have done likewise for the cabrio variant. The XKR-S gets a 550hp 5.0-litre supercharged V8, good for a 4.4sec 0-100kph time.

Porsche Panamera GTS

The gentlemen from Weissach are conforming to their bible by expanding the four-door Panamera with the GTS treatment. Compared to the regular S, the GTS achieves 30hp and 20Nm more at 430hp and 520Nm.

Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG

Like Porsche, the chaps at Stuttgart have extended the usual AMG treatment to the latest ML-class SUV. It gets a 525hp 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8; the Performance Pack version adds another 32hp to cut the 0-100kph by a 10th of a second from 4.8sec.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Not to be outdone by its rival compatriot, Chevrolet has injected more pizzazz into the open-top Camaro. But the Chevy isn't as wild as the Ford: 580hp 6.2-litre V8 capable of a lower 273kph.

Subaru BRZ

Subaru's sports car finally breaks cover in a thinly disguised concept. The BRZ looks practically like its Toyota FT86 cousin except that its gets STi details like the rear wing, wheels and side gills. The BRZ will get Subaru's flat-four 2.0-litre engine fed with Toyota's direct-injection system.

And now for the more sensible ones...
