Sunshine so far

24/11/2011

It’s beautifully sunny so far on Thursday at Interlagos but the variable weather is something which is often part of the tricky equation of finding pace at the home of the Brazilian Grand Prix.

As with any circuit, Interlargos has its own set of compromises even when it’s dry.

“The run up the hill to turn one is quite long, and there is an opportunity for overtaking here, so it is important not to set the straight-line speed of the car too low,” says LRGP’s Technical Director, James Allison.

“However, the corners in the mid section of the track are all quite long and slow, demanding higher downforce. It is important to set the correct compromise between the two.

“The track is also pretty bumpy making the correct compromise of mechanical setup very important.”

As if getting the balance right when the weather is dry was not enough, then the spectre of rain is seemingly never far away. Just witness the excitement of the 2008 season finale where variable weather contributed to a thriller with the championship decided at the final corner of the final race of the season.

“It often rains at Interlagos, and the rain can fall without warning from clouds that don’t appear to be threatening; this always keeps the race team on their toes,” confirms Allison.

The glorious weather of today sees no track action from the team’s drivers, save for an installation walk around the track. For Bruno, there’s also been the FIA press conference for his home Grand Prix.
