Abu Dhabi, UAE, November 11, 2011 – At the end of the first day of practice ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix the Sauber F1 Team drivers, Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Pérez, were 10th and 11th respectively on the time sheet.
Kobayashi lost a lot of track time in the first free practice session due to a gearbox problem, which was fixed without a new gear box being needed. In the second session both drivers not only ran the Pirelli soft and medium tyre compounds, but also two sets of test tyres each.
The second free practice session on the Yas Marina Circuit took place at the same time as the race will be run on Sunday – starting at 5pm in daylight and finishing after sunset with a full moon contributing to the great atmosphere.
Sergio Pérez:
Sauber C30-Ferrari (Chassis 03 / Ferrari 056)
1st Practice: 16th / 1:44.412 min (28 laps) / 2nd Practice: 11th / 1:41.565 min (34 laps)
“I’m confident for the weekend. We had a good day and completed our programme. Nevertheless it is difficult to know where we stand as we don’t know what the others were doing today. We learnt a lot and we will now continue to work on our qualifying performance for tomorrow. Then we will also try to improve the car’s balance for the long runs”.
Kamui Kobayashi:
Sauber C30-Ferrari (Chassis 01 / Ferrari 056)
1st Practice: 17th / 1:44.484 min (18 laps) / 2nd Practice: 10th / 1:41.490 min (34 laps)
“It is quite difficult to compare the two practice sessions, as the difference in track temperature is over ten degrees Celsius. This also means that in tomorrow’s third free practice session we can’t learn much for qualifying because again we will have this difference in track temperature. However, in general the track was quite slippery. We are pretty much okay at high speed, but we need to improve in slow corners and in terms of braking stability”.
Giampaolo Dall’Ara, Head of Track Engineering:
“It was more or less a normal Friday. However, it was not ideal to lose 50 minutes due to a gearbox problem on Kamui’s car in the first session. Apart from that everything went okay. We put some extra focus on the single lap performance. Now we have to analyse all the data, discuss it with the drivers and make the right decisions for the remainder of the weekend. It will definitely be a tight battle for positions”.

Abu Dhabi, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, 11 de noviembre del 2011.- Al final de la primera jornada de entrenamientos previos al Gran Premio de Abu Dhabi, los pilotos del Sauber F1 Team, Kamui Kobayashi y Sergio Pérez, terminaron 10º y 11º respectivamente.
Kobayashi perdió mucho tiempo en pista en la primera sesión de entrenamientos libres debido a un problema con la caja de cambios. En la segunda sesión, los dos pilotos corrieron con los compuestos blandos y medios de neumáticos Pirelli, utilizando dos juegos en cada prueba. La segunda sesión de entrenamientos libres en el Circuito de Yas Marina tuvo lugar a la misma hora en que se llevará a cabo la carrera el domingo, a partir de las 17:00 horas del día, para terminar con la puesta del sol y la luna llena que contribuyen al buen ambiente.
Sergio Pérez:

“Estoy confiado en el fin de semana. Hoy tuvimos un buen día y hemos completado nuestro programa. Sin embargo, es difícil saber dónde estamos parados dado que no sabemos lo que los demás estaban haciendo hoy. Hemos aprendido mucho y ahora vamos a seguir trabajando en nuestro rendimiento para la calificación de mañana. También trataremos de mejorar el balance del monoplaza para una carrera larga”.
Kamui Kobayashi:
Sauber C30-Ferrari (auto 16)
Práctica 1: P17/1:44.484 min (18 vueltas) /Práctica 2: P10/1:41.490 min (34 vueltas)
“Es muy difícil comparar las dos sesiones de prácticas con una diferencia de temperatura de la pista de más de diez grados centígrados. Esto significa que en la tercera sesión de entrenamientos libres de mañana no se podrá aprender mucho de la calificación porque otra vez vamos a tener esta diferencia de temperatura en la pista. Sin embargo, en general, estamos bastante bien en velocidad, pero tenemos que mejorar en las curvas lentas y en términos de estabilidad en la frenada”.
Ing. Giampaolo Dall’Ara:
“Fue más o menos un viernes normal. Sin embargo, no fue ideal luego de perder 50 minutos debido a un problema con la caja de cambios en el coche de Kamui, en el primer período de prácticas. Aparte de que todo haya ido bien, pusimos un poco de atención adicional en el rendimiento a una sola vuelta. Ahora tenemos que analizar todos los datos, hablar con los pilotos y tomar las decisiones correctas para el resto del fin de semana, que sin duda será una batalla difícil por las posiciones”.
