Thailand Ladies Open tees off today

The 24th Thailand Ladies Open tees off today at the Lakewood Country Club on BangnaTrad Road, with 130 golfers vying for the US$135,000 plus the prestigious HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn trophy.

Jointly organised by the Thailand Amateur Ladies Golf Association and the Ladies Asian Golf Tour, the threeday tournament has opened up an opportunity for Asian players to become successful in a career of their own choice.

Although South Korean Lee Jungmin will not be back to defend her title won last year at The Vintage Club, this year's field promises a tight competition with the presence of strong players from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand.

The event has been a stepping stone for promising Asian stars to excel in major tournaments elsewhere in the world. Many golfers, who won titles on the LAG Tour, are now ranked in the top ten of the LPGA. Korean Shin Jiyai and Taiwanese Tseng Yani won in Thailand before moving on to win the British Women's Open and many LPGA tournaments.

Leading Thai players, who are moving up the ladder on other Tours include Titiya Plucksataporn, Russamee Gulyanamitta, Virada Nirapathpongporn, Pornanong Phatlum, Ornnarin Sattayabanphot, Aree Song and Nontaya Srisawang.

Miyata Space and Craft Thailand (hole 3rd 175 yards) and Mittare Insurance (hole 17th) are holeinone sponsors of US$10,000 each, while Betty Thai Silk and Jewellers are sponsoring the holeinone prize for the ProAm Tournament, while Panasonic supported the prizes for ProAm winners.

The ProAm Tournament took place yesterday, while admission to watch the ladies in action at Lakewood Country Club from February 911 is free. Truevisions will cover the last nine holes of the final round on Friday live from 11am.
