Thailand finds Japanese food imports still safe

BANGKOK, 24 March 2011 (NNT) – The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Thailand has not yet banned imports of vegetables and other products from Japan because no radioactivity contamination has been found so far.

Information Department Director-General and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Thani Thongphakdi stated that the radioactivity leakage situation near nuclear power plants in Fukushima prefecture remains stable, and no danger has been detected according to the Japanese authorities.

Upon a news report about the contamination in local agricultural products in Japan, Mr Thani confirmed that Thailand at present has not yet prohibited imports of Japanese goods because official inspections at Thai ports showed that none of the imports are contaminated.

The spokesperson added that the Japanese authorities themselves also have strict measures to inspect quality of their products prior to exporting.

Meanwhile, the Japanese ambassador to Thailand Seji Kojima has reassured that food products from his country are safe. The assurance came amid news reports that radioactive contaminants were found in food and water in areas near Fukushima nuclear power plants.
