Alonso speeds ahead in Germany

Friday 22nd July 2011

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was the man to beat during Friday's first practice session for the German Grand Prix.

Alonso said prior to the race that he was out to prove that his race-winning British GP pace was not a one-off - and he went some way towards doing that as he edged ahead of the two Red Bull racers at the Nurburgring.

Heavy rain on Thursday had hit the track but despite threatening clouds, the session was completed without drama - and former world champion Alonso, who claimed his first victory of the campaign at Silverstone, clocked a 1:31.894, finishing 0.323s up on Mark Webber.

Defending champion Sebastian Vettel was third quickest ahead of Alonso's Ferrari colleague Felipe Mass.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton was the early pace-setter but the Brit dropped to fifth place, over a second short of Alonso's time.

His McLaren team-mate Jenson Button was a place further back, while Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil, Nico Hulkenberg and Michael Schumacher completed the top ten.

Schumacher's session was blighted when he ploughed through the gravel, while Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi spun off late on.
