A WEEKEND AT GOODWOOD WITH MERCEDES GP

OTHER TEAM NEWS // 06.07.2011

Every summer, the Goodwood Festival of Speed provides a true celebration of motorsport passion with historic cars from all eras, thousands of fans and a fantastic opportunity for the team to get close to our fans away from the pressures of a Grand Prix weekend.

And speaking of precious cars, this year’s festival was no exception with the presence of exceptional cars such as the Mercedes-Benz W165, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL and the SLS AMG GT3 amongst many others…

This year, the driving responsibilities to take our Formula One demo car up the hill were with Sam Bird on Saturday and Nico Rosberg on Sunday.

On Saturday, Sam admitted to being really excited and delivered quite a show for the fans. In fact, he had so much fun that the wet tyres used for shows like Goodwood were worn very pretty much down to the canvas after his first run!

His donuts and burnouts were pretty popular, judging by the multiple rounds of applause received from the crowds enjoying the sunshine. By the time the car came back after his second run of the day, it was pretty clear that those tyres were things of the past.

When not in the car or doing interviews on the Goodwood stage, Sam spent most of his day signing autographs for the fans in front of our tent… a pretty good day for him, if not for his tyres!

Nico arrived on Sunday morning to take his turn in the car. Getting him from point A to point B through those thousands of enthusiastic fans can only be described as a pretty physical mission!

But Nico really enjoyed the experience and made his way over the Mercedes Pavilion to meet many of the team’s guests and fans. Nico ran his morning programme as scheduled, doing some nice donuts, before his afternoon run was cut short by a broken driveshaft… too many donuts perhaps! Nico took this as an opportunity to wave to the fans, something you can’t really do in the middle of a donut! He also had the chance to sit in the Mercedes W165 driven by John Surtees up the hill for a few minutes.

Goodwood is well known for bringing teams and fans closer than at a typical Formula One event, and the attendance in front of our tent every time the engine was fired up and all the nice comments and questions made for a great weekend.
