GERMANY, THURSDAY: RAIN, RACES AND RECORDS

on Jul 21, 2011

Thursday brought with it rain to the Nurburgring and a shower of questions for both our drivers ahead of this weekend’s German Grand Prix.

Since Sebastian was one of six drivers who were born here, he was in the FIA press conference along with the two Mercedes drivers, Sutil, Glock and Heidfeld. All were asked about racing in front of the passionate fans here. But for Vettel, it’s not a negative.

He said: “It is always great to have an opportunity to race in front of your home crowd. People talk about extra pressure, but, to be honest, it is more positive than anything else to have people in the grandstands, people outside and inside the paddock support you and trying to push you forward to allow you to find maybe this extra tenth or two around the lap.”

And since he was sitting next to a German driver who had achieved seven times what Sebastian managed last year, there was obviously calls for comparison. But Sebastian saw there was no real comparison: “We will always be compared to Michael and left with his big footprints, but it will be very, very difficult to catch up. Everything he achieved is quite phenomenal, so the question is not if there will ever be a German achieving that again, the question is if there will again be a driver in Formula One achieving what he has done. “

Germany is also a country where Mark has achieved great things for Red Bull Racing. It was here that he scored his first podium for us in 2007 and the German Grand Prix is where he scored his maiden pole and maiden victory. So how did he rate his chances here this season? “Pretty high I think, form has been pretty high of late, I've always enjoyed driving here so there's no reason why we can't do well again this weekend. The weather might be a little bit interesting for everybody but I'm certainly ready for that as well so yeah it will be a good place to start.”

The talking ends and the Formula One begins here tomorrow at 10am. Whatever the weather.
