Alonso finishes fourth in Belgium

Fernando Alonso came within a hair’s breadth of the podium after a fine race in which he had moved up as much as four positions. Tire problems kept the Spanish driver off the winners stand.
Fernando Alonso came in fourth at the Belgium Grand Prix. The Spanish driver put in a fine performance in which he started out fourth, yet for stretches managed to lead the race.
The Spanish driver’s start was spectacular. Despite clocking a final time of 1:52.588, it was Red Bull’s Vettel who took the victory once again.
“You’ve got to keep fighting, as long as it is mathematically possible.”
After the race Fernando Alonso stated that he is far from giving up. “The key to the World Title is that they have a really good car. They’ve had 12 pole positions in 12 races this year which, along with the four from last year, makes 16 in a row,” Alonso observed after the race at the legendary Belgian track.
Alonso is conscious of the fact that he has practically no chance at winning the World Championship, in which he is currently in third place, behind Vettel and his Australian teammate Mark Webber. He has stated that “you’ve got to congratulate them, because they are the ones really dominating the World Championship.”
“They tend to finish all the races, and win them to boot. But you’ve got to keep fighting, as long as it is mathematically possible. Though you’ve got to be realistic too. It’s one race less and 25 points less,” Alonso explained. With seven races left to go, he stands third in the World Rankings, 102 points behind Vettel. “They’ve got lots of first and second places, and we’re not at that level,” the two-time world champion from Asturias admitted.
