Monza, Italy, September 2011 – With 33 laps of the 55 agreed laps around the Monza circuit and with the same set of tires the Mexican driver, Sergio “Checo” Pérez was having an excellent race when all of a sudden had to retire from the Italian GP due to gearbox problems in his Sauber C30-Ferrari #17.
Checo, who had started the race from the 15th position, had an excellent start moving up to the 10th position with which he avoided a collision of several cars in the final stretch, in the chicane zone, caused by Vitantonio Liuzzi of Hipsnia.
Checo could, lap after lap advance some position up to P6, his best of this 13th round of the F1 World Championship in lap 23, overtaking the Brazilian, Felipe Massa of Ferrari, however moments after Felipe recovered his position leaving Checo 7th.
However the question was when was Sergio going to do his first pit stop. All had started from the 16th lap on and Sergio was already in his 20th lap, then 30th and in lap 33 a problem in the gearbox caused him to retire from the race.
Checo was out by the Curva Grande, where his Sauber Team was already expecting him in pits. A great effort was coming to an end.
“I had an excellent rhythm when I felt something strange with the gearbox and had to stop. It’s a shame because this would’ve been my best race of the year and my best results.” commented disappointed Sergio “Checo” Pérez.
