Brazilian GP - Fry: “next year we need to give our drivers a better car”
Interlagos, 26 November – As darkness and a few spots of rain settled on the Interlagos circuit, the Scuderia’s technical director, Pat Fry took a break from his work to talk to the media in the Ferrari hospitality area. As a difficult season comes to a close, the most pressing question was what Fry and his team were doing to ensure next year is much better. “I think we have learned a lot from this year and I have had to learn how the team works once I joined it,” began the Englishman. “Within our team, there are certain things that work very well and others that have not. At the moment we are trying to concentrate on those areas that need improving. We have made some changes in the aerodynamic department and I feel that has been successful as the work we are doing is more creative than before. Now we must see if we can deliver the goods, but as always we will not know exactly how successful we have been until the cars roll out in Melbourne next year.”
Fry feels that creating the right working environment is one of the key elements to a successful future: “It has been important to create a working environment where people feel prepared to take more risks without worrying about what the fallout would be if something they try goes wrong,” he explained . “For an F1 car to be quick, everything in design terms has to be on the edge and if you are too conservative, you end up with a package that is slow. So you must push to the limit and there will be times when we go over it. But people should not be afraid of that. We have to be sensible and take risks where there is a big benefit in lap time performance but not take silly risks.
“I think we are always going to be looking for new elements in terms of restructuring, even if I am quite happy with the way most of the organisation is working and responding. There are still some small areas that need sorting out and we will be doing that in the future. What I admire everyone for at Ferrari is their work ethic and just how hard they work. Now we need to get everyone working together as one: if we can do that, we should be in good shape. As far as the new car is concerned, hopefully everything is in place to deliver a car for the first winter test and then be in a position to upgrade it for the third test. We need to provide both drivers with a better car for 2012.”

Interlagos, 26 novembre – Mentre il buio e alcune gocce di pioggia calavano sul circuito di Interlagos, Pat Fry, il direttore tecnico della Scuderia, si è concesso una pausa dai suoi impegni di lavoro per parlare con i giornalisti all’interno dell’hospitality Ferrari. Con una stagione difficile ormai prossima alla conclusione, la domanda più incalzante è stata cosa Fry e il suo gruppo di lavoro stiano facendo per assicurarsi un 2012 migliore nei risultati. “Abbiamo imparato molto da questa stagione. Quando sono arrivato ho dovuto apprendere come lavorava la squadra”, ha esordito l’inglese. “All’interno del team ci sono alcune cose che funzionano molto bene, altre meno. Al momento ci stiamo concentrando su quelle aree da migliorare. Abbiamo fatto alcuni cambiamenti nel reparto aerodinamico e ho la sensazione che il risultato sia stato positivo perché il lavoro che stiamo facendo è molto più creativo rispetto a prima. Adesso dobbiamo vedere se riusciremo a fare quello che tutti speriamo, ma come sempre non avremo certezze sulla bontà del lavoro svolto fin quando le vetture non si schiereranno a Melbourne il prossimo anno”.
Creare il giusto ambiente di lavoro è per Fry una dei fattori chiave per un futuro di successo: “E’ stato importante creare un ambiente di lavoro dove le persone si sentano preparate a prendere più rischi, senza preoccuparsi delle conseguenze nel caso qualcosa su cui si sta lavorando non desse i risultati sperati”, ha spiegato Fry. “Affinché una monoposto di Formula 1 sia competitiva, tutto in termini di progettazione deve essere al limite. Se si è troppo conservativi, il risultato è un pacchetto troppo lento. Bisogna quindi spingersi al limite, e ci saranno occasioni in cui si supererà. Ma le persone non devono avere paura. Dobbiamo essere ragionevoli e rischiare dove c’è un grosso beneficio in termini di prestazioni sul giro, non prendere rischi inutili”.
“Siamo sempre alla ricerca di nuovi elementi parlando in termini di riorganizzazione, anche se sono abbastanza contento di come stia lavorando la maggior parte della struttura e di come risponde. Ci sono ancora alcune piccoli aspetti da sistemare, e lo faremo nel futuro. Quello che ammiro in coloro che lavorano per la Ferrari è l’etica del lavoro, e quanto ciascuno si impegni duramente. Adesso dobbiamo far lavorare tutti come un’unica entità: se riusciamo nell’intento, dovremmo essere in buona forma. Per quanto riguarda la nuova vettura, abbiamo fiducia che tutto proceda come da programma per poter avere la monoposto per il primo test invernale e poi essere nella condizione di aggiornarla per la terza sessione di prove pre-stagionali. Dobbiamo dare ai nostri piloti una monoposto migliore nel 2012”.
